ANY EXCUSE FOR A PARTY:

Since this region is rich in history and culture, it enables the populous to indulge in festivals of all types including enactments and celebrations of food and wine. A typical example is the lovely hill top town of Barga. It hosts a Scottish festival with pipe bands etc., a fish and chip week, (again related to its Scottish and UK ties) together with a comprehensive classical music season at its lovely theatre. Visit barganews.com for details.

We list below some of the major events within easy reach of your holiday home in Tuscany, but one should always watch out for the posters advertising festa, or sagra, which are everywhere especially in August.

In Bagnone, every Sunday in October you can enjoy a chestnut and mushroom festival along with the local wines.

Filetto, (near to Villafranca) the second two weeks of August there is a medieval market and the entire village goes back in time. Other medieval enactments and evening festivals include Piazza el Serchio, and Gragnola, the first week of August. These usually consist of displays of archery with traditional flag throwing together with the prerequisite singing eating and drinking.

Pontremoli, hosts its famous Fiera del Libro, book fair in July and August.

Carrara, has its festival of marble at the beginning of August, actually in the town of Resceto,

Fivizzano, has its Sapori around the 5th and 6th June. This brings this lovely market town alive well into the evening and is a great celebration of local culture. It also hosts the Fiera de Santmartino celebrating the new wine around mid November.
